This week, a tragic and sobering incident unfolded at the Southwinds Point Apartments in Stockbridge, Georgia. Two men lost their lives in what authorities are calling a double shooting—one of the men was a bounty hunter attempting to serve a warrant.

According to police, the incident happened just before noon on Wednesday. Officers responded to reports of suspicious individuals around 412 Evergreen Way. Initial callers believed the men may have been bounty hunters on the job.

Minutes later, 911 lit up again—this time with reports of gunfire. Witnesses told dispatch they heard several shots ring out, and then a follow-up caller confirmed someone had been shot outside an apartment.

When officers arrived, they found a man—later identified as 46-year-old Curtis Johnson—dead outside the unit. Johnson was a licensed bounty hunter. A trail of blood and spent shell casings led officers back into the apartment. There, in a rear bedroom, they discovered a second man, 30-year-old Edward Atkins, also deceased.

Both men had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators have confirmed Johnson was acting in his capacity as a bounty hunter, while Atkins was the resident of the apartment.

At the time of writing, the Stockbridge Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively working the case. No further details about what led to the deadly exchange have been released.

My Thoughts

Any time someone loses their life in the line of duty—or in the middle of being served a warrant—it hits close to home for those of us in the bail enforcement and bonding world. It’s a dangerous profession that doesn’t always get the respect or recognition it deserves, and unfortunately, this is a stark reminder of just how quickly a situation can escalate.

I’ll be following this case closely, and I’ll share updates as more information becomes available.

Stay safe out there.
